A Reality Check: An Appalling Truth

Sermon Title: A Reality Check: An Appalling Truth.

According to a recent poll, 81% of American believes in heaven and 80% hope to go there. In that same poll, 61% believe in hell and less than 1% thinks it is unlikely that they will go there. God’s righteousness is compromised, repentance is optional, atonement is unnecessary and the truth of God’s Word is nullified when we say there is no hell.

I) The Reality of Hell.

A) Unquenchable fire

Mark 9:43 42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.

B) Memory and Remorse – Luke 16:25-28 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house- 28 for I have five brothers so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’

C) Unsatisfied Thirst – Luke 16:24-25

D) Frustration and Anger – Luke 13: 27-28 Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ 28 In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth,

E) Unspeakable Pain and Misery – Rev. 14:10-11 10 he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”

F) Eternal Separation

II Thessalonians: 1:8-9 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from[b] the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

G) Undiluted Wrath – Rev. 20:15 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

II. The Reasons People go to Hell The reason people go to hell is because they reject Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord

A) Pride–They don’t want to give up the Lordship over their lives to Christ
B) Self-Righteousness–They believe God grades on a curve and they haven’t done anything to deserve His wrath

They don’t think they fall into a category found in Revelation 21: 8 8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” They don’t believe Romans 3: 10 “None is righteous no not one” refers to them.

C) Misguided faith–

1) Those who worship the wrong god 2) Those who worship the right God but in the wrong way. III) The One Rescue from Hell.

In one word Jesus.

“Hell is the backdrop that reveals the profound and unbelievable grace of the cross. It brings to light the enormity of our sin and therefore portrays the undeserved favor of God in full color.” ― Francis Chan, Erasing Hell: What God Said about Eternity, and the Things We’ve Made Up

Romans 5:8 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Acts 4: 12;  12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men[a] by which we must be saved

II Corinthians 5:21 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Ephesians 2: 8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Romans 10: 9-10 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Matthew 16: 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. IV) Our Responsibility to those who are going to Hell A) Pray–We ought to pray for the lost as if their eternal soul depends on it B) Prepare–but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, I Peter 3: 15 C) Preach

Sharing Jesus should be as natural as talking about your favorite thing. People know the things they talk about and they talk about the things they love.

“Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.” ― Francis Chan, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God
